You may have heard whispers on the streets – murmurs of breweries competing against each other in beer games and putting local Springfield chefs on an international platform in an event called 417 Burger and Beer Wars…. Those rumors, spoken softly under one’s breath, is now in full swing. Finally, something fun to do in Springfield, Mo. during the summer!
We know what you’re thinking.
What is 417 Burger and Beer Wars?
Well I’ll tell you what it is – it is THE event of the summer. What is better than burgers and beer on a hot summer day? By turning it into a competition! It’s a burger competition, beer tasting, and brewery war all wrapped up into one delicious heap of awesomeness for those who are 21 and up!
Benefitting the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Springfield, this event is meant to do two things:
1. Raise money for a NEW playground for McBride Elementary School, and
2. Incite a spirit of fun and play between Springfield’s own local talent: namely, chefs and breweries.
The Chef Competition
Chefs – it doesn’t matter if you work in a restaurant, own one or is a dad who grills every day rain or shine… Here, it’s Joes versus Pros! You can enter this competition. All you have to do is fill out the formhere and pay the entry fee of $250.
Why is there an entry fee, you ask? The entry fee is tossed into a big pile of prize money for the winning chef to roll around in! It’s not enough they will be awarded a Golden Ticket to go to Dallas, Texas to compete in THE World Food Championship event, they’re gonna need some travel money to get there and back!
We will have World Food Championship judges tasting and rating the food. This will be a double-blind competition SO NO CHEATING!
The Brewery Competition
This is where it gets fun – not only do we have certified brew-judges tasting the beers submitted in the various categories, but the breweries will have an opportunity to challenge each other in one of three competitions: cornhole, beer pong and/or quarters. Bets WILL be made (legal, ethical and moral, of course).
That’s right. Breweries can bet against each other with things like having the losing team come to their brewery on a Saturday and wash the winning teams’ cars. Or, the losing team has to wear the winning teams’ swag for two weeks while beer tending. Or the losing team has to sell the winning teams’ beer in their brewery for a week. You get the idea!
The entry fee for breweries is also $250 – again, the money goes into the pot for cash prizes for the winners. You can sign up here.
At the end of this fun event, we are holding a little something called The BOSCARS (beer Oscars) – a term coined by Trolley Bike owner Brian Ash (pure genius, you are).
Other Fun Stuff
Aside from the breweries and chefs duking it out in a battle royale, there will also be live music, alcohol sampling, and another surprise we can’t wait to tell you about, but we must wait …. because we aren’t supposed to talk about it until the DAY of the event. We are beside ourselves with excitement!
Who is this Benefiting?
Aside from putting our local chefs on the international stage, we are raising funds for a very special group. Organized by WeDames and the Ozark BBQ Alliance, this event is meant to raise money for the Downtown Kiwanis Group – a 501(c)3 which benefits local children in and around Springfield, Mo. And in this particular case, is raising funds for McBride Elementary school.
They are in need of a playground for physically disabled and special needs children. Their current playground has, for lack of a better phrase, seen a whole lotta love. This new, state-of-the-art playground won’t only be for McBride Elementary students, it is for the community. If you didn’t already know, their playground is not fenced in. It is open to the public and to other families in and around that area – a destination playground if you will. I’ve seen the plans – they even have a wheelchair accessible slide, complete with a lift!
