Plan Your Valentine’s Day Early!
I know it’s a little early, but what can I say? I am a romantic at heart…even though the whole notion of romance is silly. It was probably an idea created in order to glamorize something in order to close more sales. But regardless, I am in too deep – I shamelessly admit I love every sappy romantic movie out there.
So why am I writing this so early? To give the romantically challenged folks some time to plan a special outing or ining with their significant other (*hint hint). Besides, if you are planning on hitting up Touch, Flame or the Tower Club restaurant with your lover, you MAY want to schedule your reservation early – these places tend to be packed around this time of the year.
But if you are like me and shy away from the traditional nice dinner out, chocolates and a movie, then perhaps one of these ideas will pique your interest:
Valentine’s Date Night Ideas
- Plan a date night indoors (without the kiddies).
This means you both think up a menu, shop for the items, cook together and eat together. Not only do you avoid the traffic jams, but it is fun cooking with your favorite guy or gal…unless they can’t cook. Then you had better take the reins. You could choose to watch your favorite series after, or play a fun “adult” game with just the two of you. Either way, it ends up being romantic without putting a damper on your budget.
- Game marathon!
Go to an arcade and “compete” against your S/O with all your arcade favorites like skeeball, whack-a-mole, or a 3rd person shooter game. You can make things interesting with a bet, or two, or go double-or-nothing…you get the idea 😉
- Go to a dance class together.
I used to dance salsa when I lived in Malaysia, and you know how I got into it? My boyfriend at the time suggested it. In all honesty, I hated it at first (maybe because I have two left feet). But as time went on and I got the basics down, I ended up making a lot of friends and having the time of my life at local and international salsa festivals. I was even in a commercial once! Regardless, it can be a fun experience for you and your S/O to go out and try something new.
- See a comedy show.
I checked out the Blue Room Comedy Club a while back with some friends on open mic night. And though some of the local comedians were a little awkward, I had to give them mad props for getting up there in the first place. It takes a lot of courage to get up on stage and try something new in front of a room full of strangers. If open-mic night isn’t your thing, The Blue Room has awesome professional comedians come in every Friday and Saturday night, and the tickets are extremely reasonable. I would highly recommend checking out a show and laughing the night away with your partner.
- Take a brewery tour.
While I am not a fan of hoppy beer, Mother’s Brewing Company or Copper Run Distillery gives brewery tours which are sure to educate you on the beer-making process while making you and your S/O all saucy.
- Have a cheese and wine night
This is WAY more up my alley… even if my guy isn’t big on wine. You could always check around town to see if there are any wine and cheese tasting sessions at one of the local restaurants. In fact, there is a Midwest Regional wine, beer and chocolate fest happening February 4th at the Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds. It isn’t on Valentine’s day, but who can say no to beer, wine and chocolate??
- Drive-in, anyone?
While they are 20 or 30 minutes outside town, I’ve always enjoyed a good drive-in movie. There is one in Seymore, Mo and another in Aurora which isn’t too far out of your way. Besides, a scenic drive can make for some great conversations.
- Brew your own beer.
Brewing your own brand of beer has become a fad for some Americans, and luckily for us there are places in Springfield you can pick up your own brewing kit.
- Take a ride on the trolley bike!
If you haven’t seen the trolley bike puttering around downtown Springfield, Mo then you need to hit downtown SGF more! You get a tour of downtown while sipping on your favorite beverages – there isn’t anything quite like it. Check out their website for availability – if you reserve it early enough you can get a couple of your friends to ride around with you.
- Hit the club
I am not a huge fan of the club, but anything that involves dancing or getting close to my guy automatically makes me a fan. There are a few clubs in downtown SGF, just be sure to do your due diligence before showing up!
- Be tourists in your own city!
It’s fun being a tourist, so why not dedicate a day or evening to checking out the sights, sounds, and tastes of our fair city? I used to do this in Kuala Lumpur even though I lived there for 10 years, and I have to say there was ALWAYS something new to discover. Springfield is no exception, so get out and go exploring!
- Explore a local winery
Places like Oovda, Tyler Ridge and 7 C’s aren’t too far outside Springfield. And though it isn’t anything like Napa Valley California, this doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time. You never know – there could be a live band playing at one of the wineries you frequent!
- Play a childhood game (snakes and ladders, checkers, sorry!, and twister)
There’s nothing like a little nostalgia to get you in the mood, and what better to bring in childhood memories than through an old game? If you want to heat things up, I recommend playing twister.
- Head to the Spa
Alright gentlemen, this means you too! There are so many things you can do together at the Spa like a couples massage. And say what you want about men getting manis and pedis, I happen to think men look great after getting their nails trimmed and their cuticles treated. It makes you looked more polished!
- Organize a dinner party with you and your coupled friends
I am a fan of throwing dinner parties, but it isn’t for everyone. You have a menu to come up with, groceries to buy, and then throwing everything together into a well-thought out soiree. If you are averse to cooking for others, make it a potluck with champagne, wine, and beer. Be sure to start early so you can kick your friends out when it is time to be alone.
While waiting until the summer time may be the best option for stargazing, if we are having one of those super hot evenings in February, get your guy or gal, get a blanket and lay under the stars for some cuddle time – it’s budget friendly and incredibly romantic.
- Take a surprise day-trip
So we named off some breweries and wineries with which you could take your S/O on a surprise trip, but you can also do other things like hit the lake in a rental (you don’t have to get in the water if it is cold), visit the Top of the Rock in Branson or Eureka Springs. Don’t tell them where you are going – just make sure they have the day off and swoop them off their feet.
I love Valentine’s Day – it’s fun, it’s romantic, and it encourages couples to spend a little more time swooning instead of keeping to their daily routine. If you have any great Valentine’s ideas which are tested and true, feel free to let us know! We can keep adding to this list people.
