It’s easy to lose track of how important time spent on enjoying life is. We often push back those few hours or few days we can get because we have a million other things to tend to. We then become frustrated or “burned out” and suddenly feel we need to have that time we shoved to the back burner immediately. Naturally, by that point, we are generally so wrapped up in our projects and schedules that we have to try to find the time to spend on ourselves or with our families. Springfield, Missouri may not be a big city, but it can sure feel like the nonstop life we would experience in a massive, looming, time restrictive city.
Taking Time With Your Family ~ My Father’s Life Experience
My father came over the other day and I wasn’t home, so he sat down with my husband and they started talking. Not about anything important, just stuff and things, whatever came to mind, when my dad suddenly uttered how he felt about the way we were living our lives. It’s not what you may initially think, though. He told my husband that we spend too much time thinking about everything we HAVE to do, and too little time thinking about what we WANT to do and carrying out those wants. My husband later told me he was shocked by my father’s words, considering he is a very strict and driven man who always works and has never not provided for his family. In short, he was a work-a-holic, but he did it all out of love for his wife and children.
After he blurted this out, things became very quiet between them. After a while, my father continued. He told my husband that he had made a huge mistake in his younger years, that he had hurt his family. He’d spent my brother’s and my entire childhood gone, working. He missed out on so many wonderful moments because of his absence and now regretted it.
As my husband was telling me about this strange exchange of admissions, I was completely dumbfounded. My father was a wonderful father and did everything he could to be around and my brother and I never questioned his absence. We understood. Did we miss him? Yes, but we understood.
He finished what he was saying by imparting a wish for us that we could take more time to ourselves as a family and enjoy all our wonderful moments, keeping them safely locked away in our memories ready for remembering when we are old. This stuck with my husband and after his telling me, stuck with me, too.
We are tired. Woefully tired, often, but it’s learning how to keep those few hours or few days as a priority and follow through with the wants we have for them. I am guilty of pushing them aside, just as most of the people I know are, but my husband and I recently made a deal with each other: we will enjoy life more and prioritize our life to be led by what little time we have for our collection of moments. We decided there were plenty of regrets in life and there was no need to create more.
Since we made our deal, we’ve been bike riding with our son more, playing in the river more, going for ice cream more, and laughing a lot. We’ve created space for our family and we are better for it. With that being said, it’s important for us to maintain making time for the two of us whether that means spending it together or allowing individual me time for each other.
All-in-all, we have seen a vast improvement in our handling of stressors and our happiness in general. We work hard and deserve to fulfill our wants. How do you spend your time, and more importantly, when did you last take time with your family?
