There is no nice way to put it – pain sucks. It’s annoying, it agitates and it is distracting for the person enduring it. And while it is an unwelcome guest, pain does have a purpose.
When I was living in Malaysia, my partner started getting this intense pain in his hip that wouldn’t quit. In fact, it became worse over time until I was giving him hour-long massages and straining my fingers trying to help ease his pain. Two years went by where the discomfort grew stronger and stronger until he couldn’t sleep. It was so great he was talking about wanting to die. Enough was enough! I knew seeing a chiropractor was out of his comfort zone, but he needed to do something about his aching hip – after three sessions with a local chiropractor, the pain went from a level 10 to a level 3…and after seven sessions the pain had completely diminished. He still went back from time to time, as a sort of bodily maintenance, and was extremely grateful to get his life back. Who would have thought a little bit of pain could cause so much grief…the culprit? A bone behind his knee!! What??
Discomfort and pain is an indication that something is off in your body. The problem is though we experience physical pain, we don’t always know where it originates from or what it is trying to tell us. This is where Dr. Russ Fowler comes in: he deciphers the pain people experience via chiropractic care.
A Little About Dr. Russ
Dr. Russ Fowler is a chiropractor who specializes in sports injuries, and lucky for me he is located conveniently in Springfield, Missouri at Perfect Health Chiropractic. As an athlete himself, his passion is helping people be more active, flexible and healthy.
He is happily married to a wonderfully fun woman, has four children and hails from Arizona!
Licensed in December of 2000, he was actually studying to be a physical therapist when he fell into chiropractic care. He was a certified strength and conditioning specialist, worked in physical therapy and was a strength coach and rehabilitation specialist. If that wasn’t enough, the man has also played professional and semi-professional soccer.
Joint, Bone and Muscle Pain
The number one complaint patients experience is a tie between neck and low back pain. The interesting thing is even if you have pain in your lower back, it may originate from your neck and vice versa. In other words, just because your lower back hurts doesn’t mean there is something wrong with your lower back – it could be something in your neck or legs!
Dr. Russ spoke about the balance of joint function and muscle mass in certain areas of the body. For example, muscles around the joints need to be flexible enough and the joints themselves need to be in alignment. If there is an imbalance there or if the joints aren’t unaligned, it creates more strain on the muscles. This is where you get your neck strains and pulled muscles!
Surprisingly, one of the number one contributor to pain is posture! Many of us are stuck looking down at our laptops (I’m totally guilty of this), or are looking at our phones most of the time, and aren’t paying attention to how we carry ourselves and how we are walking. Jobs which require long hours of sitting can cause wear and tear on muscles and tissues causing them to break down…coupled with lack of activity and motion you can put yourself in a world of pain!
How to Stop Muscle and Joint Pain
The best way to stop pain is to prevent it before it starts. Going in for regular chiropractor checkups is very important – you can align your joints and balance out your muscles. Also, stretching exercises are a must!
In fact, Dr. Russ has a little workout regime himself –it includes lifting weights, playing soccer, and running at least four times a week. He even plays in a few tournaments! But let’s be honest, not all of us make time to exercise four times a week….and the best exercise regime is one you will actually do!
As such, Dr. Russ has a few stretches which can help prevent muscle and joint pain while simultaneously increasing your health and wellness!
All in all, Dr. Russ is amazing which is why he is the only chiropractor I visit, and the only one I trust my daughter with. He always has a smile on his face and you can tell he is passionate about health and wellness. While he specializes in sports injuries, he is also a family chiropractor. He got my daughter to open up to him one fateful visit. She is incredibly shy when she meets people for the first time, but once you get under her skin she is your best friend – as Dr. Russ found out.
