A subtle hint of smoke was in the air as I entered the building adorned with rustic decor, and I was immediately greeted by Denelle. She gave me a warm smile and led me, along with Scott, into their main hall to have a friendly chat.
Sitting down with Denelle and Scott from Missouri Spirits was fantastic. I love meeting new people in and around Springfield, especially when they are doing something extra for the community. Aside from giving people a cool place to put up their boots, hang their hats and quench their thirst, this lovely local business strives to create jobs while doing their very best to buy local without compromising on quality – but let’s get to the booze!
As you may know, Missouri Spirits is the first and only distillery in Springfield, Missouri and aside from boasting their own amazing line of spirits and private labels, their liquor can be found in the best bars and restaurants in and around town such as Hemingway’s, Scotch and Soda, Big Whiskey’s and Springfield Brewing Company to name a few.
How it All Began
Scott, the owner and founder of Missouri Spirits, is originally from a small town in Oklahoma. He enjoys the simple things in life like his family, hunting and fishing and of course, making his own spirits! With a background in marketing and sales, he had helped a friend at another distillery before he broke off with a desire to create his own private label and started Missouri Spirits in 2011.
While he has plans down the line to expand to Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri Spirits already creates private labels for four (4) other companies, and their brand can be found in twenty (20) states.
Though Denelle recently joined the close-knit family at Missouri Spirits, one of the things she loves about working there is that the days vary and there is a lack of monotony – what more can you ask for? She enticed me to taste one of their signature drinks, “boat shoes” with their homemade bourbon instead of vodka as the original recipe calls for. Though I am a Bourbon Old Fashion kind of gal, this drink really revved my engine.
Missouri Spirits Food & Drinks
Upon first tasting the infamous “Boat Shoe” cocktail, it contrived images in my mind of relaxing on a white-sand beach somewhere near the equator. The only thing that was missing was one of those little umbrellas and the sound of waves lapping gently onto the shore. The drink was strong. In fact, the bartenders at Missouri Spirits seem very enthusiastic about ensuring each concoction goes down smooth but kicks your butt at the same time. I can see how this particular highball could catch one of its’ victims off guard: it’s so tasty you can’t stop at just one.
Because I do enjoy good bourbon, I ordered my date a Bourbon Old Fashion and we sipped the night away…responsibly of course. Before bidding farewell for the evening, I had to have a shot of their notorious bourbon – it was smooth like silk and warm in the belly, just as it should be.
They have a wide variety of drinks of which I couldn’t have possibly tasted all in one evening…that would be irresponsible. I do have to “mom” in the morning. The good news is that happy hour is every day, save for Mondays & Sundays when they are closed, from 4:00 pm to 6: 00 pm, and Saturdays from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Keep in mind that they DO rent out their building (details are below) and will close on days that there is a large function. You can always check their FaceBook page here to see whether or not they are booked for the day. Either way, I highly recommend going downtown and checking them out.
While they are launching a new menu in September, they have some amazing food in their establishment: the most popular being the deep fried bologna sandwich! They smoke much of their food items including the salmon, ham, hummus, and cheeses. Get this, they also have smoked ice. Though I didn’t have the opportunity to sample it in one of my drinks, it is definitely on my bucketlist (who is free next Wednesday – show of hands?) Naturally, some of their menu items are cooked with their own bourbon, such as the bourbon brown sugar glaze on their pulled pork sliders!
In short, their food and their drinks match the bucolic feel of the building and the simple yet elegant decor.
Women’s Whiskey Wednesdays (How did I NOT know about this?)
Every Wednesday is Women’s Whiskey Wednesday! This means if you are a lady (and at least 21 years of age), you can enjoy $5 cocktails all night long. Does it get any better than that? So ladies, if you are looking to go someplace fun downtown with our other gal-pals in a fun rustic joint, give me a call and I’ll join you. Just make sure it is a Wednesday night (I’ll be sure to have a babysitter). This very well could be the best women’s happy hour Springfield, Mo has to offer!

In summary, this really is an awesome place to hang out or host a girls’ night out. WeDames will keep this in mind for the future. What I like most about it was I could talk to people without needing to shout, or lean in, or ask “What” five hundred times. The ambiance is rustic-romantic, the drinks hit the spot, and the people are incredibly friendly. And if you don’t want to share the place with a bunch of strangers, you can book it for yourself! Life sure is good in downtown Springfield.
