What do you get when you mix beauty, brains, and business acumen? A Deborah!! Deborah Troeger, that is. This sassy woman is no stranger to living a life of possibilities, and I had the honor of sitting down with her and picking her brain on a little personal growth.
Deborah is a business coach who works with clients all around the United States. Even though she only moved back to Springfield a few short years ago, she hit the ground running and her coaching business reflects these results. As an entrepreneur, she understood that it was often a lonely road that few understood, and from this pain was birthed her purpose: to support entrepreneurs in knowing they aren’t alone and in supporting them in getting to the next level of their career.
The Number One Fear Most People Face is the fear of failing or of making a mistake, from Deborah’s experience. In fact, this fear can be so strong it stops people from ever truly living life – and as you may know, life begins outside your comfort zone!
If you think about it, it makes sense people are afraid of failing. In school, we may have been made fun of, or we could have been demoted or fired for making mistakes in our career. When making a mistake affects our basic survival, it’s no wonder so many people are hard-wired to be “perfect.” At the same time, we must remember to err is human.
Mrs. Troeger and I looked at this topic in-depth, and she made some valid points. She said fear often paralyzes us and keeps us stuck in one place. We become “content” with being “discontent” in a manner of speaking. But one key to life is to keep moving, no matter how slow. If you do make a mistake, you can take it as feedback instead of as a failure…after all, a GPS can’t tell you where to go unless you are moving!
One story she related was about her chance meeting with a professional barefoot skier (those athletic types who ski barefoot on the water). Being a barefoot skier herself, she noticed this professional fell down almost every time he started skiing. The reason? He was trying out new tricks and techniques! He knew he didn’t know everything and was ready for the falls it took for him to learn something new. This is how we learn folks – from making mistakes!
How to Get Over Your Fears
I delved further into Deborah’s mind, “how do YOU help people get over their fears?”
She said simply, “by asking questions.”
She explained, if you ask yourself, “What is the worst that can happen,” most people discovered any calamity they might experience isn’t that bad….they may actually survive at the end of it. After addressing this question, you can then ask yourself, “What would you achieve if you couldn’t fail?”
The point is this: most people are deathly afraid of making mistakes, but mistakes are how we learn and grow… and if you aren’t growing, you aren’t living! So if you have ever felt afraid of something and acted anyways, congratulate yourself! You cannot have courage without fear (courage = fear + doubt + action). So go get ‘em you courageous son-of-a-gun!
Finding Your Purpose
Another awesome thing Deborah does is support people in find their purpose. Keep in mind, this isn’t done in one five-minute conversation, it takes time and patience in understanding the big “why” you are here. Regardless, I asked Deborah how she gets clients started in finding out their purpose. She recommends making a few lists after answering these questions:
- What do you LOVE to do?
- What kind of games did you play as a child?
- What excites you? What gets you jumping out of bed?
- What did you like about past jobs you held (even if you didn’t like them overall, there could have been one or two things you really appreciated about it).
For some people, these questions can be difficult to answer. If this is the case for you, then try writing down what you DON’T particularly like.
The most awesome part about her job, Deborah admits, is watching people blossom emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. Whether she has a client who tripled his income, or another who conquered their fear of networking (which has grown their business tremendously), her favorite part about coaching is watching other grow personally and professionally.
Deborah is an amazing individual who genuinely cares about the people she meets. Every time I have met with her we end up talking about personal things…like girls do…and she has always ALWAYS offered support. The cool thing is she has monthly talks, workshops and events she holds for the public – normally the 3rd Friday of every month at 425 Downtown.
While each talk has a different theme associated with it, the essence of each event is the same: detoxing negative self-talk which holds us back in life. If you aren’t the sociable type and would rather meet Deborah one-to-one, she offers a complimentary consultation free of charge. All you have to do is email her at Deborah@you-niquecounsel.com or give her a call at (720) 352-2313
