Summer is that time of year where kids get to sleep in, play with their friends and have fun in the sun. For working parents however, if your children aren’t old enough to look after themselves, then a simple call to grandma and grandpa, or engaging in babysitter.com is a necessary evil.
As a child of the 90’s (to be clear, I was born in the mid 80’s), my mom would kick my sisters and I out of the house daily. We had to go to the neighborhood park or pool until lunch time, and then after lunch, it was time to head out again. Sunburns were a regular occurrence in our household, and I had no shortage of fond memories with friends and the other children in our neighborhood.
But let’s get real for a minute: children today grew up in the era of technology. Things like google and youtube are a go-to activity for my seven-year-old on a daily basis. If I remember correctly, the only thing I could do technology-wise at that age was play snake or pac man, and it was for five-minute intervals because I had to share the big square-boxed computer with my sisters. Perhaps this is why 90’s children sometimes feel a little lost: we come from an era where we had to entertain ourselves while embracing the dawn of the information age…we’ve seen it all. Our childhood was all about using our imaginations which suddenly and unexpectedly was interrupted by smart phones, gadgets, apps, games and the like. Our generation is that awkward “in-between” one where we miss the sunshine, books on rainy mornings, and butterfly filled days but can’t live without our schedule, caffeine and netflix. But I digress!!
The point is this: even if you are a stay-at-home mom or dad, finding activities to engage your children can be a never-ending task. Sure, there are lots of ideas on Pinterest, and we even wrote an article on Things To Do With Your Kids In Springfield, Mo but let’s be honest: as parents, we are often looking for something cheap and time-consuming that keeps our kiddos occupied and happy!
There are the usual things to do in Springfield, Mo: movie tickets are great, but kids never want JUST movie tickets – they want the popcorn, candy and num nums to go with the movie! A trip to Silver Dollar City is fun, but people didn’t nickname the place “steal-your-dollar-city” for nothing. So what is there to do in Springfield that is fun and free for kids? Surely there must be SOMETHING they can do that takes a few hours and leaves them happy and fulfilled! OK, I’ll get to the point already, calm down.
