I love me a citrusy, bubbly Moscow mule. If made right it isn’t too sweet, not too tart, and you won’t make a funny face while sipping on this refreshing adult beverage. While many people would rather enjoy a Moscow Mule in the summer than in the winter, I find them suitable to be had year around.
Coming in at approximately 170-200 calories per serving, you could also opt for a skinny Moscow mule whereby you substitute ginger beer for diet ginger beer bringing the calorie count down to 95-110 calories. Keep in mind though, if you are ordering this baby while out and about in Springfield, MO., many places don’t carry diet ginger beer!
Is this particular drink an acquired taste?
Due to its simple flavors and delicate taste, a Moscow Mule isn’t really an acquired taste. I’ve never met someone who didn’t like this libation. Unless an individual had an aversion to ginger beer and/or vodka, I’d say this is a pretty great drink for anyone 21 and up!
1 1/2 Ounes of Vodka
1/6 Ounce of Lime Juice
4 Ounces of Ginger Beer
Lime wedge and mint for garnish
Fill your copper mug with crushed ice, pour the ingredients in the mug, stir, garnish and enjoy!
Foods Which Pair Well with a Moscow Mule
Spicy foods and white meat go well with le Moscow Mule. Seeing as ginger and lime are found in this feisty concoction, Asian cuisine such as Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and Malay foods go well as well as seafood and curry dishes.

Origins of the Moscow Mule
As with all things alcohol, there are a few different versions of how the Moscow Mule came to be. One such account credits John Martin (who had bought the rights to Smirnoff Vodka) and Jack Morgan (Owner of the Cock n’ Bull pub in L.A.). Martin had been having a difficult time selling Smirnoff Vodka to the public, so had supposedly collaborated with Jack Morgan to create the Moscow Mule. He then took pictures of bartenders holding his vodka and a copper mug and showed them to other establishments in order to show them what their competition was up too. The drink took hold and it wasn’t long before it was sold in almost every bar in America.
Another account credits Wes Price, the head bartender of the Cock n’ Bull as one of its creators. And in another twist of events, supposedly Morgan had a girlfriend selling copper mugs – the rest, as they say, is history!
