Uuughhh I know! It’s time to start being active and paying attention to our diet and exercise regime so we can look hawt for summer. Perhaps something spurred this collective desire many of us subscribe to this time of year – it could be the swimsuit which has been hiding in that drawer for the last few months, or maybe you looked in your fridge and realized you haven’t eaten a raw vegetable since Turkey Day. Whatever it was, we are here for you. We, for lack of a better phrase, “feel” you, which is why we took the liberty of writing down some quick and easy ways you can help your body fit back into those short-shorts and tank tops by doing as little as possible. After all, we don’t want to strain ourselves! The easiest way, at least for me, is to do a cleanse.
Cleanses do the following:
- rids your body of toxins,
- cleanses the digestive track, and
- gets your body doing what it does best, optimally (detoxification).
If you think about it, your body is a detox machine. You go to the bathroom, you sweat, you get sick occasionally – the point is your body is constantly expelling toxins. But when toxins build up over time, say during winter when weekends are filled with pajamas, Netflix, and take-out, your body can’t rid itself of all the toxic build-up. The detoxification pathways end up getting clogged. Unclog them and watch the magic happen. When your body is functioning optimally, keeping off those extra pounds is easy as pie…a delicious, artificially-sweetened pie….mmmm…
Mostly Effortless Cleanses
- Infrared Sauna Detoxification
Aside from penetrating an inch and a half into your skin to revitalize your cells, Infared Sauna use pulls toxins out of your body via sweating. Toxins are often stored in excess fat cells underneath the skin, and not surprisingly, one of the functions of this excess fat is to keep toxins which are not eliminated fast enough through natural means (such as urination and defecation) away from your body’s vital organs. As sweating releases these toxins, the excess fat which was kept in your body no longer has a reason for sticking around and your body flushes it out.
The excess fat we are talking about can usually be found around the mid-section and other perceived “problem” areas. If you are taking in more toxins than you can expel, your body has to do something with them – and putting said toxins near vital organs is NOT an option. The function of excess fat, according to Dr. Barry Sears, is to blanket excess toxins and keep them away from your vital organs. When you hang out in an infrared sauna (which is different from a traditional sauna), the heat penetrates your skin, warms you up from the inside out and pulls toxins out of your body via sweat. I personally have used infrared saunas for years, and have absolutely loved them…and luckily, there are a few places in Springfield, Mo which has infrared saunas in their establishments (Perfect Health, A Pathway to Healing and Valeriea Wellness Center to name a few)!
- Whole Foods and All-Natural Foods
While it may be easier to grab a quick snack from a vending machine instead of spending the extra time to make a salad before work, a clean diet is important for keeping your body clean. While you could go gung-ho and eliminate all processed foods from your diet, you could just also go with the all-natural rule:
if it is found in nature, it is going to be better for you than processed food.
Have you noticed processed foods are more affordable than natural organic food? What is with that? With GMOs (genetically modified organisms, or food not found in nature) and a slew of other unnatural food products labeled with exciting slogans such as “FAT FREE,” “HORMONE FREE” and other marketing gimmicks providing a perception that such and such food is healthy, it’s easy to get confused. If it didn’t come from nature, your body may have a difficult time digesting it.
This doesn’t mean you can’t eat a pizza or a burger or dine out in Springfield. It just means to be more conscious of what you put in your body. If you had to choose between an apple or an apple granola bar, an apple is found in nature. Granola bars don’t grow on trees, and neither does cereal, slimming shakes or protein powder. I know, many health-nuts may disagree with me, but arguably the most sustainable system known to man is nature – and she knows best in my book.
- Juice Detox
I have a love-hate relationship with juicing. Have you ever tried to sit down and eat as many apples as you could? You can eat one, but by the time you finish the second one you don’t want to eat any more apples. Throw a juicer into the mix and you can drink 6 apples in under five minutes. I am not sure if our veins were made to take that amount of sugar in one go, regardless of how “natural” it is. That being said, I have done a juice cleanse on more than one occasion, but I was a bit particular of what the heck went into my juice and how much of it!
You can easily do a three-day or seven-day juice fast (after you receive the approval from your doctor) with fruits and veggies such as spinach, kiwis, apples and you get the idea. Trust us – it’s easier than you think. Surprisingly, a juice cleanse has left me feeling full and kept hunger pangs at bay so focusing on work and family was easy. Not to mention, if you wash everything beforehand you can have a meal in under five minutes. Ladies, just be sure to do the cleanse at a time when you are NOT on your period. I tend to get headaches if I do a juice cleanse during the most important time of the month.
By taking small daily steps toward your spring cleanse, you can enjoy maximal health and get well on your way to that summer body before spring is over! Our only request is to do so safely and in a way which is sustainable and healthy. If you do have any health concerns, be sure to ask your doctor before starting a detoxification regime.
