Be Yourself Being Someone Different
For all you die-hard anime, Disney, video game, Marvel, DC & Comic fans, we have some great news for you: there is an official COSPLAY community in Springfield, Missouri! In fact, I was honored to have met up with the founders of this group – two sisters who, at first glance, I never thought would have such a passion for dressing up in wigs, princess and anime costumes. This is why it is important NOT to judge a book by its’ cover folks: you don’t know someone until you really know someone.
But digressing for un momento, speaking of gamers and gaming news in Springfield, Mo, check out Geek.0 on facebook ~ it is a wealth of knowledge on all things games (and the page admin is a veteran gamer if I may say so myself)!
But coming back to COSPLAY in SGF, I originally met Arantxa at our first Ladies’ Night Out event: she was young, beautiful and a little quiet at first. As we talked and I discovered her passion for COSPLAY, she opened up and shared tons of information on the topic. Fast-forward a few weeks later, and I found myself at Flo’s eatery and wine bar with her and her sister.
As I sat with Sasha and Arantxa, I was surprised at their commitment to dressing up as their favorite characters. First and foremost, these two lovely ladies are absolutely stunning. Sasha was exceptionally bubbly, and rightfully so as I had previously met up with Arantxa once or twice to pick her brain about local event management. I had a feeling she was letting her little sister do all the talking for the evening, and talk we did! This duo had an interesting dichotomy: they differ completely in terms of demeanor and attitude, but their sisterly bond and COSPLAY passion was intense (the familial force was with them).
While the COSPLAY Community hosts two events a year (one in spring and one in autumn), they also participate in a myriad of other smaller events. I briefly saw Arantxa dressed up as an anime character at the Japanese Concert at Greenwood June 3rd of this year and though my small posse wanted to meet up with her, she was so busy with people clamoring to take pictures with her and her group that I wasn’t able to even say hi (plus, it was my little one’s bedtime so we had to leave a little early).
Aside from the Japanese concert, this COSPLAY community also urged its’ members to participate in the Disney Cover Show on May 28th at Lindberg’s hosted by Rob Bailey and the Springfield Famous. When I showed up for that concert, there were quite a few people donning their favorite Disney Costumes: it was a sight to see and I was sad to have left my kimono back in SE Asia!
How The COSPLAY Community in Springfield was Born
Their first major event happened in December 2015 at the Christmas parade. After starting a Facebook community and seeing how the market was responding (in which people responded with great fervor), they decided to put out a post to get people to dress up and march in the Christmas parade with them. The rules were simple: pick family-friendly COSPLAY costumes, pay $10 to cover your entry fee and simply show up in downtown Springfield.
Where they only expected a couple close friends to join, many more turned out for the event which was later shown on T.V.. After realizing that they had stumbled onto something huge, and after discovering what it did for the moods of some of the people who attended, they started a local committee which was designed to tap into the different age markets in Springfield, Missouri. They have two high schoolers on the committee, two University students, and a mature” member of the committee. And thus, the COSPLAY Community in Springfield was born!
When is the Next COSPLAY Event in Springfield Mo?
While the next event won’t be until fall of this year (projected to be late September), there are several other events that this home-grown COSPLAY community participates in. For example, there is a Japanese festival coming up that is to be held at the Botanical Gardens at Nathanael Greene Park, September 9 – 11 that you can check out here.
Of course, the big event these two ladies are looking to attend is the Anime Expo in Los Angeles July 1st – 4th. This is the BIG LEAGUES, and can be likened to Comic Con…albeit the Anime version. Fate was smiling on them when they got their tickets for this event, which is known to sell out within minutes. It was a miracle that they had a chance to even purchase the tickets online, and as I write this Arantxa and Sasha are preparing for their trip to L.A. now!
Fun Fact: When I asked Sasha which anime was her favorite, she said Osomatsu-kun…be sure to tell her this should you ever bump into her!
For other events where you can meet up with these two lovely ladies and other like-minded COSPLAYERS, you can visit their Facebook page here to stay in-the-know about local happenings.
