What is the School of Rock in Springfield, Mo.?
To answer that question, possibly the bestest thing ever to happen to Springfield! Another fun thing to do with kids in Springfield, Mo., the School of Rock is THE PLACE to send your kids to take music lessons, or your husband or bestest gal pals…anyone really.
In fact, you can register yourself, your child, or both for a free lesson here. Their musical focus is namely keyboard, drums, bass, vocal, and guitar lessons in both private and group lessons and they host some uh-mazing concerts.
Conveniently located on E. Sunshine near B.J.’s Trophy Shop, this little music school is pretty hard to miss. I loved walking in and getting a tour from the lovely owner, Jennifer Jester. She was fun, quirky and smiled easily…plus, she is a rock star both figuratively AND literally. But more on her later!
The space is any parents’ dream – with soundproofed rooms, autographs of music legends draping the walls and a lively atmosphere, this is one fantastic way to teach your child/children music without unintentionally creating disdain in them with traditional repetitive lessons. Nope! This is a party school! And where there is fun and play, children seem to retain more information (at least in my experience).
What Services Does the School of Rock Offer?
While the school is focused on tiny adults, big adults can also come in and take lessons! Many of their programs include a weekly one-to-one lesson from one of their 18 music instructors, coupled with a group rehearsal. This is so students can embrace musicality, music theory, and solo performances while simultaneously mastering the art of performing in a group.
The best part is, they take students as young as preschoolers (approximately 3 years old)! So long as a person is willing to learn, this school has the ability and capacity to teach.
Again, their focus is on keyboard, drums, bass, vocal and guitar, and it is NEVER too late to learn something new! This is something Jennifer Jester, owner of the School of Rock in Springfield, Mo., knows all too well!
The Queen Running the School of Rock in Springfield, Mo.
Jennifer Jester is one incredibly dynamic woman who has married her passion for music with a successful business model. I met her at an Adsmith Happy Hour and when Angela, the beauty, brawn and brains of this company, asked if I was interested in interviewing her I jumped at the opportunity! Pick the brain of an influential boss babe based here in Springfield? Yaass please!
Jennifer spent her life learning classical music – her mother was a piano teacher so she didn’t really have much of a choice (you know how it goes) – and though she has a doctorate in music performance and several other degrees, she is still a full-time student at Drury, her focus being Music Therapy. Never too old to learn something, am I right?
This lovely lady has travelled the world playing music and living life. She has frequented China, Europe, France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Canada, Mexico and Thailand. A woman after my own heart! But one question remained…
How Did She Get Into the School of Rock Business?
Mrs. Jester was living in Baltimore when she was first introduced to the School of rock – Jennifer had a friend whose child was enrolled in the school, and she saw the concert and absolutely loved it. A few years later she found herself as the director of music business and technology in a Philadelphia University and part of her job scope included supporting students in finding internships.
Her second encounter with the School of Rock had everything to do with her placing students in internships, and again, as she educated herself on this school, she loved this little business. She was at a point in her life where she had one year left of teaching in the University before she reached tenure, or she could give it all up and follow her heart pursue owning her own business…Luckily for us, her heart prevailed and it landed her smack-dab in the middle of the country – a place she never thought she would come back to – (she grew up here and went to Kickapoo, but we won’t hold that against her).
It would seem the stars aligned for Jennifer – she fell in love with someone here who she later married, her sister was having a baby (also in Springfield), and she decided to give up her job at the University and take on the School of Rock franchise. She literally hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped in four years!
Where Do You See the School of Rock in 5 Years?
I asked her this and she said with wide eyes, “Bigger!” At the moment, this lovely local business boasts 18 music teachers and TONS of happy customers who can’t stop talking about how awesome the School of Rock is. In fact, my daughter has a birthday coming up and guess where we are having her party? That’s right, they host birthday parties too! There’s dress up, lessons and a concert at the end – does it get any cooler than that?
In summary, this young school has grown exponentially in the past four years, and with current trends, it will expand even more thanks to the commitment and drive of Mrs. Jennifer Jester. Again, she is one bad-ass babe…her favorite lyrics sum up the essence of her business – “life is a journey, not a destination” – Amazing by Aerosmith.
If you haven’t checked it out, I highly recommend it. Call and make an appointment to see the lessons they offer and other packages! In fact, you can sign up for a free lesson here.
