Image may not be everything, but it is pretty dang crucial ESPECIALLY when you are getting your business out there in front of the masses. If you are a small business owner in Springfield, Mo, then chances are your face is going to be the first thing people think when they hear your business, so you had better have a professional business headshot!
While photographers seem to be a dime a dozen here in Springfield, there is a BIG difference between good photographers and GREAT photographers, and after seeing some of Jared Cullison’s work, it is easy to see that he is one of the greats. What is better than knowing a great photographer who takes amazing pictures? Knowing a great photographer who is offering personalized business headshots for $99.
Of course, this is a one time offer: this advertising photographer strongly supports Springfield businesses and wants to give something back to the community, along with his hair and makeup side-kick Elizabeth Cloud (you can read all about this amazing woman here).
Location headshots run anywhere between $95 an hour to $350 an hour in Springfield, Mo and typically do not include hair and makeup. On July 25th, at Missouri Spirits in downtown Springfield, Jared and Elizabeth are teaming up to offer top quality headshots with light hair and makeup styling for only $99 (you need to register HERE for this). This is a fantastic deal. As someone who has hired photographers in the past for professional headshots and been extremely disappointed, I have to say that I am really excited about this awesome event by Jared Cullison Photography.
About Jared Cullison
One of the first things I noticed was how incredibly passionate he is about his profession. Always camera-ready (because he never knows when the light is going to be just right and he wants to be prepared), Jared is someone who loves meeting new people and who can easily make friends wherever he goes….and he did! We wandered around downtown Springfield together in search of an awesome venue for this event on July 25th, and every stranger he spoke with ended up becoming his buddy!
Do you remember how I mentioned there is a difference between a good photographer and a GREAT photographer? After our hangout session where I tapped into his near twenty (20) years of experience as a professional photographer, I learned that one of the most crucial things a photographer can know is to understand light. Understanding the different sources and knowing how it falls on subjects is of the utmost importance.
Being a professional photographer isn’t just about having a camera and taking candid photos – anyone with a smart phone can do that – it is two parts: understanding the business side of photography and understanding the artistic side of photography.
The Business Side of Photography
Let’s face it, if you are going to be a full-time photographer, you must have some sort of business acumen. According to Jared, his saving grace has been networking and connecting with the right people. You also can’t be afraid to get out there and try new things, and one of the first things he did, aside from checking out 1 Million Cups Springfield, he joined The M.O.B. (masterminds of business)
The Artistic Side of Photography
Photography is art: it is all about lighting, timing, and finesse. For those who are artists, whether they are musicians, chefs, painters or photographers, art is about transcending survival mode. For example, there is a difference between eating for survival, like instant noodles or fast food, and dining. Dining is art: it transcends simply ridding oneself of their hunger pains and has evolved into an experience. Photography is all about transcending survival, capturing an experience and relating emotions through photographs, and this is something Jared excels in.
Tips for Aspiring Photographers
For all of those who are aspiring photographers, one tip Jared passed on was to always sell your work for what IT is worth, not what you think people are willing to pay.
I asked him the difference between art and business, and when a photographer should bite the bullet and do what the market asks or if they should only stick to their art, and his answer was brilliant. He told me that in any business, you will have to pay the bills which means you may have to do things that aren’t your passion. As an entrepreneur, I can attest to this. On the other side of things, however, he encourages (earnestly) to continue your passion and do what you love. Eventually, you will meet the right people who love your art for what it is.
