As of June 9, the Blue Room Comedy Club – local comedian Christopher Ray’s baby – will have been growing and healthy for a full year.
An addition to Billiards, the comedy club allows for those who like to play pool to also have a great time laughing with professional nationally-touring stand up comedians, tasty beverages and arguably one of the best burgers in the Ozarks. Big-time names have been on the Blue Room stage, many having been on the Bob and Tom radio show, late night talk shows, and Comedy Central. This is the year to celebrate a full calendar of success.
It’s not the first time a stand-up comedy club has opened in town.
There have been many to come through Springfield but none has been as successful, or as strongly supported by comedy lovers in this town.
Now we are coming on 52 weeks of Christopher Ray and the Blue Room bringing the best nationally touring comedians to the city of Springfield every Friday and Saturday night.
“It’s official; Springfield is on the map for stand up comedy. We have comedians from as far as LA and NYC contacting us wanting to perform here,” explains Ray.
The comedy momentum Ray was building quickly turned into a living breathing comedy club one year ago after a visit from comedian Tim Northern, famous for his appearance on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Northern gave Ray advice on opening a club which he followed to a ‘T’, bestowing on him the nickname “Godfather of the Blue Room” from Ray.
“I’d never tell him to jump off a bridge because he’d probably do it,” Northern joked.
On a serious note, Northern said “The Blue Room has stayed open and continues to grow because of Ray putting in the effort, the work, and getting the word out to Springfield. Every important city needs a comedy club.”
“The reputation spread because of the great acts and he treats the acts so well,” Northern added. “There’s a great symbiotic relationship between him, the building, the acts and the fans.”
Most relationships don’t last 52 weeks these days and most comedy clubs in Springfield haven’t lasted that long either.
National Comedians Sleeping in Ray’s Basement?
Comedians Dusty Slay and Northern agree that the kind of comedic camaraderie Ray has established in Springfield, treating fellow comedians as brothers and sisters by going as far as opening up his home, is what makes Springfield a top midwestern destination for their craft.
Ray’s Blue Room has made a name for itself among the comedy ranks by quickly becoming one of the top comedy clubs in the region. Dusty Slay, seen on NBC, CBS & TMZ, told Chris Franjola, a comedian for the Chelsea Lately show who appeared at the Blue Room in April, about the hospitality he received when he performed in Springfield earlier in the year.
“I think it’s great that you get to stay in Chris’ basement,” Slay jokingly said. “He took me out to see the city, which most people don’t do. He took me to cool spots. We even hung out with a buddy of his.”
It’s an amenity some hosts forget, according to Slay. “Other smaller rooms act like you’re in the way of the day-to-day routine,” Slay said. “Every once in a while you’ll come across a room where their comedy is on the side, almost like it’s a nuisance. They just have comedy to hang out. The Blue Room acts like a big-time club.”
The official anniversary will host none other than Blue Room Comedy Club Godfather Tim Northern and Connor McSpadden who was recently on the Roast Battles with Jeff Ross.
“This anniversary be a full-laugh riot,” Ray said, before he returns to the whole reason he began this venture is because the people of Springfield. “It’s been a successful year because of the people coming to shows, almost weekly; and trusting that we created a great atmosphere for the comedians and the audience. We want to celebrate our success because it is the greater Ozarks that has put us on the map for comedy.”
Thanks to accolades from professional touring comedians and support from the vibrant Springfield community, labor pains were minimal for Ray and the typical stress of birthing and raising a fresh new business has been well medicated with laughter. Come celebrate this comedy club’s first year of life!
